Dmitry Orlov, Washington Capitals reach one-year, $2.57 million deal

Dmitry Orlov and the Washington Capitals have come to terms on a one-year, $2.57 million deal that will see the 25-year-old return to the Caps for the 2016-2017 season.

Orlov is expected to fill a top-four role for the team, and is most likely to play along side either Matt Niskanen or John Carlson. Orlov spent the majority of last season playing alongside Taylor Chorney and Nate Schmidt, but once Brooks Orpik returned the pair were thrown together. As a tandem, they had mixed results, but were for the most part break even, posting a 52 percent raw corsi for, and a -0.8 percent relative corsi for.

Orlov by the Numbers

Last season, Orlov saw his best results paired alongside Schmidt. The two young defenders dominated the possession game, and Orlov earned 7 of his 29 points last season in 20 games with Schmidt as his main partner.

In 201 games for the club, Orlov has totaled 60 points and 63 penalty minutes. Not known to be a particularly tough opponent, the 6’0, 212-pound defencemen plays a steady, reliable, two-way game. Although Orlov has spent a majority of his time with the Capitals playing special teams, it is expected he will see a jump in his average time on ice as well as some time on the penalty-kill as he becomes a more important fixture for the team.

As reported by GeneralFanager.com, the Capitals are now left with $884,874 in cap space and have filled 44 of their 50 contracts.
