Erik Karlsson trade

It’s time for another edition of NHL rumours. The off-season will be starting soon and some teams are going to load for some big moves. Teams are going to push hard to try to land a superstar that could change the fate of a franchise. There are some big names that may be on the move in the off-season. However, there may be a lot of moving parts to make one of those big blockbuster trades happen. Today’s NHL rumours looks at an Erik Karlsson trade update.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Erik Karlsson Trade Update

Rumour: The Daily FaceOff’s Frank Seravalli put out his list of trade targets for the summer. Karlsson was listed as the top trade target on the countdown. A reigning Norris Trophy-winning defenceman has only been traded once and that was Doug Harvey back in 1961. Karlsson being traded would be a monumental deal if it does go down.

However, making a trade would be very hard due to his $11.5 million cap hit. San Jose would likely have to retain a decent portion of that to make a trade happen. However, does general manager Mike Grier want to have that much dead money on his cap for another four seasons. Grier will probably have to adjust his asking price to facilitate a trade.

Can an Erik Karlsson Trade Happen?

There were some rumblings at the deadline, but a deal didn’t happen. This type of deal seems like more of an off-season trade. A lot of things would have to happen to make Karlsson move teams. A team like the Edmonton Oilers would love to have Karlsson, but a lot of of cap space would have to be made.

Getting Karlsson would be the ultimate game-changer for a franchise. However, it may be a trade worth exploring further down the road when the hit and term won’t be so harsh.
