NHL Rumour: Toronto Maple Leafs Front Office Interested in Former Olympian

With the off-season not too far away, there up plenty of rumours swirling in the air. There have been plenty of Toronto Maple Leafs front office moves. Newly appointed GM Brad Treliving could be looking to make more additions. Nick Kypreos recently linked the Leafs and former Coyotes captain and Olympic hockey player Shane Doan to each other.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Shane Doan Connected to Toronto Maple Leafs Front Office

Doan, who is currently employed by the Arizona Coyotes as Chief Hockey Development Officer. He has been around the league for a long time. Doan and Treliving have known each other for quite some time. This goes all the way back to 2003 when Treliving was assistant GM of the Coyotes. The extent of what role Doan could assume was not specified. With front office experience already it wouldn’t be hard to find a fit.

What is Being Left Unsaid

The biggest question moving forward is the contract status of Auston Matthews. Matthews has one year left on his deal and is eligible to sign an extension as early as July 1st, 2023. It’s no secret that Matthews was a Coyotes fan while growing up in Arizona. One of his idols was Shane Doan. While Doan has some front-office experience and has been around the league a very long time, it could be a greater ploy to help convince Auston Matthews to stay around. Bringing Doan into the Toronto Maple Leafs front office could be one way to make staying even sweeter.

Lots of change is going on with the Toronto Maple Leafs front office, so these types of rumours are not surprising. It will take time to see how everything shapes up. But in the meantime, the Leafs now have a GM to direct the team and continue to build off this season’s success.
