It’s time once again for another round of NHL rumours. The Stanley Cup Playoffs are starting on Monday, but that means other teams are trying to figure out what went wrong. Teams are trying to dissect all of the bad things that happened in the 2022-23 campaign. These clubs are already thinking about the off-season and the future. We also see clubs worrying about the 2024 off-season. Today’s NHL rumours looks at the Calgary Flames UFAs (or unrestricted free agents) for 2024.

Future of 2024 Calgary Flames UFAs
Rumour: The Athletic’s Julian McKenzie took a look at the group of Flames free agents for the 2024 off-season. Elias Lindholm, Tyler Toffoli, Chris Tanev, Mikael Backlund, Noah Hanifin and Nikita Zadorov. Oliver Kylington is also part of the group, but was not discussed in the piece.

Toffoli and Zadorov both discussed wanting to stay and sign new deals. Hanifin was also willing to talk about inking a new contract while Tanev was worried about recovering from injury. However, there were two names that were more hesitant to commit their futures. Backlund and Lindholm didn’t immediately say they wanted to re-sign.
Lindholm said that he wants to win a Stanley Cup and these comments could make things interesting. General manager Brad Treliving may have to do some thinking this off-season.
Decisions of Calgary Flames UFAs
Treliving was quick to make a deal when he felt that he couldn’t re-sign Matthew Tkachuk. There’s worry that Lindholm and Backlund will walk away for nothing and Treliving may want to get ahead of the problem.
This year’s free agent class includes Milan Lucic, Troy Stecher, Trevor Lewis, Nick Ritchie and Michael Stone. They will get the full attention, but the Flames’ management staff may have to concentrate on 2024 sooner rather than later.
