History was made tonight for the Toronto Maple Leafs. A record as old as time officially belongs to someone new. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner broke the consecutive points streak. He has now had points in 19 straight games breaking Darryl Sittler‘s record. It’s a huge day not only for Marner but for Maple Leafs history.

This record is as old as time. Sittler scored points in 18 straight games in 1978. A record that was set 44 years ago and has stood the test of time. But now that record belongs to Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner as he continues his stellar play a quarter into the season.

It is difficult to load up on points in the NHL, especially consecutively. And for over a month of gameplay, Marner has been one of the most consistent forwards for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In their matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Marner scored the opening goal of the game to break the record. Just a beautiful moment for him as he has etched his name in the record books for the Leafs.
The Marner Effect
Mitch Marner has been one of the best Maple Leaf forwards let alone one of the best wingers in the league. Since joining the league, he has been a consistent mainstay on the team’s top six. Still young and in his prime years, he has so much great hockey left in him. Marner has played 452 games and has 146 goals, 338 assists, and 484 points. Already north of a point-per-game player, the sky is the limit for him and the team. Just a tremendous accomplishment for him to do what he did, breaking the record.
Now, the next thing Marner and CO. will be looking to break is winning a first-round playoff series and ending that drought.
