Columbus Blue Jackets Prospect Signs Entry-Level Deal
Dumais, an 18-year-old winger from Ile-Bizard, Quebec, is currently leading the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) in scoring with 19 goals and 30 assists for the Halifax Mooseheads. The signing adds the highly skilled Dumais to a growing list of skilled wingers recently drafted by the Blue Jackets. Dumais is scoring 2.22/points per game and is on pace to score 150 points. He is just ahead of phenom Connor Bedard, the presumed top pick in the upcoming 2023 draft.
The 5-8, 169-pound Dumais joins a young, skilled offensive Blue Jackets development pool. Elite Prospects says that Dumais thinks the game well and can open up spaces in the offensive zone. Dumais spent some time with the club this summer. He participated in prospects camp, played in the Traverse City Rookie Tournament, and participated in training camp before being sent back to Halifax.
While Dumais is not a coveted first-line center, his talent adds to a right side that will need reinforcements soon. Veteran winger Gustav Nyquist will be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end and Jakub Voracek‘s contract ends after the 23-24 season. This allows Dumais to develop and then make a push for a roster spot.
What It Means for the Blue Jackets
Amid a pretty forgetful start to the season, the Blue Jackets could use a bit of good news. Dumais joins recent draft picks Liam Foudy, Kirill Marchenko, Yegor Chinakhov, Kent Johnson, Cole Sillinger, and fellow draft classmate Luca Del Bel Belluz as prospects in a now-skilled pipeline. The injury-plagued Blue Jackets currently have several young players taking their lumps on the big club. Based on their performance thus far, it appears the Blue Jackets will be a fixture in the Bedard sweepstakes all season. Perhaps one ray of light for this season is Dumais will be a gem from the 2022 draft.
