Now that the Stanley Cup playoffs have come to an end and the business of the off-season is fast approaching, moves are being made. Teams are gearing up to get contracts signed and to trade players as they see fit. Another way to acquire players is to present offer sheets. Below we will discuss the possibility of defenceman, Rasmus Sandin getting an offer sheet and what that means for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Rasmus Sandin Possibly Getting Offer Sheet
The 22-year-old defenceman is a restricted free agent. He is coming off a three-year contract that cost the Maple Leafs just under 900,000. This past season Sandin scored five goals and recorded 16 points in 51 games played. He sustained an injury in March against the Nashville Predators and was out for the remainder of the season. The young defenceman has shown a lot of potential in his short time in the NHL.
What This Means for the Maple Leafs
After signing Timothy Lijegren to a S1.4 million deal, the Maple Leafs have just under $6.5 million of cap space left to work with. Not including Sandin, they still have some forwards they could re-sign and then there is Jack Campbell. And his asking price seems a little too steep for Toronto at this point. That is also not taking into consideration any new potential players they would want to add if the asking price was in their wheelhouse.
Another issue with keeping Sandin is the Maple Leafs already have an overabundance of left-handed defenceman. On the left side, Toronto has TJ Brodie, who prefers to play on his weak side, Mark Giordano, Jake Muzzin, Morgan Rielly, and Sandin. For other teams, presenting an offer sheet for Sandin would be an easy way to acquire him. And depending on the amount, losing a pick that isn’t a first-round pick. Either way, this would create issues for the cap-strapped Maple Leafs. Sandin is a player the Maple Leafs probably don’t want to lose but may have to given the situation they have found themselves in.
