John Tortorella is the new head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. After having a gap between coaching, the man has found his way back behind the bench. The Flyers had a brutal season and hoping Tortorella can come in a right, the ship. He will be in the fold for the next four years and will make four million per year. John Tortorella Hired As Head Coach
The Philadelphia Flyers are coming off one of their worst seasons in recent memory. Finishing 8th in the metropolitan division and posting a record of 25-46-11, they became basement dwellers. The Flyers ranked 31st in goals per game with 2.56 and 27th with goals against per game with 3.59. They had the league’s worst powerplay. They traded longtime captain Claude Giroux and fired head coach Alain Vigneault. Nothing went right for the team and a new voice was needed.
Out of all the coaches that were on the open market, John Tortorella won the sweepstakes. Tortorella comes with experience and has a unique coaching style. He has previous coaching experiences with the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers, Vancouver Canucks, and Columbus Blue Jackets. In almost 1400 games coached behind the bench, he has a record of 673-541-132.
Tortorella comes with playoff experience. He is a Stanley Cup Champion winning the trophy in 2004. He helped take the Rangers to the conference finals in 2012 and guided the Columbus Blue Jackets to sweeping the juggernaut Tampa Bay Lightning in 2019. His record in the postseason is 56-64.
What This Means For The Flyers
Tortorella is old school. He has a unique style of coaching and likes to keep it simple. This is by no means the sexiest hire, but it could be the right hire. Tortorella will get the Flyers back to playing simple and basic hockey and doing the fundamental things and playing a north and south style. After the season, just keeping it simple and playing hard night in and night out could bode well for the team. Will the Flyers make the playoffs? That remains to be seen. But they will improve and play better as a team due to the structure he will bring to the team.
