The Montreal Canadiens have announced that goalie Jake Allen is out for the rest of the 2021-22 season with a groin injury. Montreal also announced that defenceman Justin Barron will miss the rest of the campaign with an ankle injury. The news was announced on Tuesday afternoon. Both players join Jonathan Drouin among players who are out for the rest of the season.

Justin Allen, Jake Allen Out for Season
Allen left in the first period of the Canadiens’ 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Injuries have troubled the Fredericton, New Brunswick native, as he’s been limited to 35 games this season. The 31-year-old netminder has a 9-20-4 record with a 3.30 goals-against-average and .905 save percentage. Allen did manage to record two shutouts this season with the Habs.
Over his nine–year NHL career, Allen has played for the St. Louis Blues and the Canadiens. He has a career-record of 168-126-35 with a 2.60 goals-against-average and .911 save percentage. Allen also has 23 shutouts and was drafted in the second round, 34th overall of the 2008 NHL Draft by the Blues.
There’s no word on when Barron suffered his ankle injury, but it won’t require surgery. However, he’ll miss the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs for the Laval Rocket. The 20-year-old scored his first career goal this season with Montreal and has two points in seven career games. The Colorado Avalanche drafted him in the first round, 25th overall of the 2020 NHL Draft.
What This Means for the Future
Samuel Montembeault will be the starter for the time being, with Cayden Primeau backing him up. However, the big news may be Carey Price will return to the lineup to end the season. The Vezina Trophy winner has been battling injuries and other issues, but is almost ready to come back.
Price’s return would be a bright spot on a pretty dark season for the Canadiens. He’s been practicing as of late and it only seems like a matter of time before he plays. The Canadiens had to make roster moves in order to fit his $10 million salary under the cap.
