Marcus Foligno is scheduled for a hearing today with NHL Player Safety after kneeing Winnipeg Jets forward Adam Lowry. Foligno was later suspended for two games for his actions.

Marcus Foligno Has Hearing Scheduled for Kneeing Incident

It looks to be a short stay for Foligno’s return to the Minnesota Wild lineup. As quickly as Foligno returned to the lineup, following an upper-body injury, he looks to be back watching from the sidelines again.

Last night’s chippy affair between the Wild and Jets saw 40 minutes in penalties handed out. Marcus Foligno alone had himself two fights with Lowry, and it was his actions at the end of the second fight that has led to a hearing. And most likely further discipline from the league.

As Foligno and Lowry wrestled in a pile on the ice, Foligno lifted himself off of Lowry and then drove his knee into him while Lowry still lay on the ice.

Out of Character

It was an uncharacteristic move by the power forward, who is in his 11th year in the NHL. Foligno, the former fourth-round pick of the 2009 draft, has gone his entire career without a suspension.

Tempers were hot in this game right from the get-go. Before we reached the midway part of the first period, there were two fights going on simultaneously. It’s hard to say what caused Foligno to act out the way he did after his second fight but nonetheless, the damage is done. Foligno will surely be handed at least one game for his actions. But it won’t come as a surprise if he is handed more games than that, despite his clean record.

The NHL continues to crack down on incidents like this that clearly have no place in the game.

Foligno is having himself a productive year with the Wild, his fifth year with the club. Through 40 games he’s already registered 17 goals and 27 points. The power forward’s absence will be missed in the lineup.

Victor Rask, who has been a healthy scratch, will most likely find his way back into the lineup while Foligno sits out.
