The Edmonton Oilers will be without their captain, Connor McDavid tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In addition, Derek Ryan and Tyson Barrie have also entered the COVID Protocol. The Oilers have posted a record of 3-8-2 since December 1st.

Connor McDavid and Others Enter COVID Protocol
Connor McDavid hasn’t been shy of disappointment so far this season, leading the NHL scoring race with 19 goals and 53 points in 33 games so far. This is not the first time Connor McDavid has contracted COVID-19, as the 24-year-old superstar tries to guide the Oilers to the playoffs. Connor McDavid has been largely responsible for the Oilers’ winning ways over the past few seasons, along with his wingman, Leon Draisaitl.
Derek Ryan, who signed with the Oilers this past off-season has also entered the COVID Protocol. The veteran center came over from the Calgary Flames. He’s always fulfilled the role of a bottom-six shutdown forward who can win face-offs. Ryan has struggled with the Oilers this season, scoring only two points in 30 games this season.
Tyson Barrie extended with the Oilers on a three-year, $13.5 million dollar deal during the summer. After an impressive 40 assist and 48 point campaign in 2021, Barrie proved to be a major offensive contributor. So far this season, Barrie has 14 assists and 17 points in 33 games played. This puts him on pace for 34 assists and 42 points in a full 82-game season.
What This Means For the Future
In summary, the loss of Connor McDavid will not help the Oilers get back on track. Leon Draisaitl will step into the first line center role, alongside Warren Foegele and Kailer Yamamoto. The Oilers currently sit fourth in the Pacific Division, holding the 8th and final wild-card spot in the playoff picture.
