The New York Islanders have re-signed pending unrestricted free agent defenceman Andy Greene to a one-year contract worth $750,000. There is also $250,000 in bonuses on the deal. This contract carries him through the 2021-22 season.

Andy Greene Re-signs with Islanders
Over his 15-year NHL career, Greene has played for the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders. He has put up 50 goals and 204 assists for 254 career points in 988 career games. Greene signed with the Devils as an undrafted free agent in 2006 after a successful collegiate career at Miami of Ohio. He then made the PlanetUSA AHL All-Star team in 2007.
Last season he scored one goal and four assists for five points in 55 games. He also added six penalty minutes in the 2020-21 campaign. His possession numbers were 43.6 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -7.0.
It’s the second straight one-year deal that Greene has signed with the Islanders. He inked a $700,000 contract in January of this year to stay on Long Island. He’s been part of the Islanders for over two seasons after spending parts of 14 seasons with the Devils.
His best goal-scoring season was in New Jersey in the 2013-14 season with eight tallies. Greene’s best point-producing season was 37 in 2009-10 when he got 31 assists.
What This Means for the Future
It’s another team-friendly deal for the Islanders and for Greene. He’ll be a bottom-pair defender for the club and gives the blueline group experience.
He also has familiarity with general manger Lou Lamoriello, who he played under for many years in New Jersey. The contract screams of Lamoriello taking care of someone that has been loyal to him for many years.
Greene has carved out a nice career and is in line for playing in his 1,000th career game early in the season barring injuries. Not bad for someone that signed as an undrafted free agent out of college.
