Adam Fox has been voted as the recipient for the 2020-21 Norris Trophy as defenceman of the year. The award is given to the blueliner who demonstrated the greatest all-around ability at his position and is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. It must not have been an easy decision to make, as Fox was a finalist with Cale Makar and Victor Hedman. However, even though all three finalists are deserving, only one can take the award home and it was the right decision.

The NHL Awards always make some people happy and others not so happy. The Norris Trophy is, without a question, is a big reason for that. However, one of the few things not many can argue is that Adam Fox has earned it. The 23-year-old is in his second NHL season and has been an impactful player for the New York Rangers. Most nights, when the Rangers needed everyone on the ice to be contributing, Adam Fox was their most brilliant player.
Fox contributed not only with great defence but also with incredible playmaking that would end up in goals. He finished 2020-21 second among all defensemen with 47 points and led the Rangers in ice time. The American player was also trusted with a lot more defensive responsibilities than in his first year. In the 2019-20 season, his defensive zone start percentage was 41.0, which improved to 48.4 this past season. Fox also finished fourth in the Calder Trophy voting for the 20219-20 season, behind winner Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes and Dominik Kubalik. He’s the first Ranger to win the award since Brian Leetch in 1996-97.
What The Future Holds For Fox
Fox has a brilliant career ahead of him. Of course, the very young Rangers team had a huge addition with Gerard Gallant being the new head coach. However, Fox has exceeded under the command of average coaches. Imagining what Gallant will be able to do with a defenceman like him gives high hopes to any hockey fans. The defenceman is only 23 and is already having such a big impact on his team. The future for the Rangers is looking better with him, Alexis Lafreniere, K’Andre Miller, Igor Shesterkin and so many others. If his development continues to improve the way it is, Rangers fans can be sure he’ll be a superstar in their blue line.
