Auston Matthews Out Day-to-Day With Undisclosed Injury

Before the start of the Maple Leafs’ morning skate, Matthews left the ice for unknown reasons. Currently, it’s unclear how extensive his injury may be. Matthews has played part of the season with a wrist injury that sidelined him for a few games. Whether or not the injury is related remains to be seen. Last Word on Hockey will update fans as more information becomes clear.

Matthews currently leads the NHL in goals with 32 goals. His 21 assists and 53 points lead the Maple Leafs in scoring. He has 10 penalty minutes and a 57.1 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 9.7.

Matthews has played for the Maple Leafs for his entire five-year career. He has 189 goals and 148 assists for 337 career points in 322 career games. He was originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round, 1st overall in the 2016 NHL draft.

Additionally, forward William Nylander will be released from COVID-19 protocol following an additional negative test. If he comes up negative, he’ll skate with the Maple Leafs as early as tomorrow.

What This Means for the Future

Without their leading scorer, the Maple Leafs could be in trouble for the coming future. They’ll need all the help they can get from new deadline acquisition Nick Foligno and others to sub in for Matthews. There’s no telling how long Matthews will be out. Fortunately, the Maple Leafs have a substantial lead in the North Division. They currently sit five points ahead of the second-place Jets, who the Maple Leafs will play tonight. The playoffs start in a few short weeks. The Maple Leafs will need a healthy and hungry Matthews if they hope to make an impact this season. Head coach Sheldon Keefe and the rest of the Maple Leafs hope to have Matthews back as early as possible to push for the playoffs.
