The Washington Capitals announced on Wednesday that Conor Sheary signs a two-year, $3 million contract extension. The contract will carry the forward through the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, with a cap hit of $1.5 million.

Capitals Re-Sign Conor Sheary
Sheary began his NHL career with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015, signing as an undrafted free agent. He played for the University of Massachusetts for four years, being UMass’s captain during his senior year. The American player appeared in 138 games with the team, scoring 38 goals and 104 points.
He was a part of the Penguins roster for the back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. In 2018 the 28-year-old was traded to the Buffalo Sabres, who sent him back to Pittsburgh in 2020. The Capitals signed Sheary as a free agent on December 22, 2020.
So far this season he has 11 goals and eight assists in 40 games played for the Capitals. In the past two games, Sheary has three goals and five points. During his seven-year NHL career, the forward has 83 goals and 86 assists for 169 points in 365 games.
What This Means For The Future
Conor Sheary is a player that provides Washington with some depth and flexibility. Laviolette shifts him throughout the lineup between the second and third lines. However, when coach Peter Laviolette needs him in the top line, he does the job without much difficulty.
“He’s been on the power play, he’s played first line, he’s played third line. At the beginning of the year, he was in the taxi squad.” coach Laviolette said on Wednesday “So you have to give him a lot of credit because he worked for everything. And that’s what he said when he came here; he just said he wants an opportunity to play.”
The Capitals now have 11 forwards, six defencemen and one goaltender under contract from the active roster. This leaves $9.5 million of cap space remaining to sign the captain Alexander Ovechkin and the goaltender Ilya Samsonov by the end of the season.
