Goaltender Adam Scheel Signed by Dallas Stars
In his three years at UND, Scheel posted impressive numbers. This past season, he went 20-4-1 over 26 games, with a 1.74 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage. In 78 career college appearances, Scheel had a 52-18-5 record, 1.95 goals-against average, .916 save percent, and seven shutouts. He never had a losing season, nor a save percentage below .900 in his three-year tenure. Setting new career highs in his final season, he only improved in his time at the college level.
Moving Forward
The Stars have a multitude of great goaltenders, so Adam Scheel will be given the opportunity to develop in the minors. He has been assigned to the Texas Stars, the team’s AHL affiliate for now. With Ben Bishop out, Anton Khudobin and Jake Oettinger have been holding down the fort for the NHL team. Khudobin has a .906 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average. Meanwhile, Oettinger has a .909 save percentage and a 2.34 goals-against average. Tied for the seventh-fewest total goals allowed, the Stars goaltenders have been shining bright this season. On the seventh-place team in the Central Division, the goaltenders have been one of the high notes of this Dallas team.
Even with the expansion draft rapidly approaching, the Stars have two NHL capable goaltenders no matter who Seattle takes. Khudobin and Oettinger have proven their consistency, even behind a weaker team. Bishop will still likely be their number one option, but the backup is a solid goaltender either way. Scheel will be sitting in the minors for a long time, but the Stars were smart by signing him early. He will get the chance to play pro hockey at the AHL level and develop over the next couple of years. If a goalie gets injured, Scheel will be their first option to be called up. When he does get his chance to see NHL ice, it will be the first massive test of his skills.
