Hockey is back! Normally we’d be closing in on the NHL trade deadline for the final push of the season. However, we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Cam Neely Makes Comeback

1993: The Boston Bruins forward returns from a knee injury that cost him 106 games. Neely missed the time due to a hit on the knee by Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman in 1991 Wales Conference Final.

The Comox, British Columbia native returns and scores a power-play goal 4:51 into the first period. However, the Minnesota North Stars forge a 3-3 tie with the Bruins. Neely only plays 162 more games after the knee injury.

Other Notable Events

1930: Boston’s Cooney Weiland becoems the first player in franchsie history to score four goals in a 7-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tiny Thompson gets his 15th shutout in the Bruins’ 16th consecutive win at the Boston Garden.

1940: The New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens play in the first hockey broadcast on American television. New York station W2XBS uses a fixed, one-camera setup seen by 300 receivers. The Rangers beat the Habs, 6-2, en route to the Stanley Cup.

1945: Montreal’s Maurice Richard scores his 45th goal of the season, which is the most in a single season. He tallies in a 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs to break Joe Malone‘s record.

1970: The Bruins break the record for the fastest three goals in a 6-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks. John Bucyk, Ed Westfall and Ted Green all score in a 20 second span as they outshoot the Canucks, 60-34.

1978: Montreal sees its league-record 28-game unbeaten streak in a 6-3 loss to the Rangers. Hardy Astrom makes 29 saves and the Rangers get goals from Phil Esposito and Steve Vickers in the first period.

The Buffalo Sabres are the third team to score 13 goals in a road game as they rout the Cleveland Barons, 13-3. Danny Gare gets three goals and two assists while Jerry Korab gets two goals and three assists for Buffalo.

2004: New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur becomes the first goaltender in NHL history to win 30 games in nine consecutive seasons. He helps the Devils top the Sabres, 8-2.

2019: Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo moves into third on the all-time wins list with his 485th career victory.
