It is being reported by multiple people, including the Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, but after a brief return to hockey, Jonathan Toews has decided to hang up the skates. The Winnipeg Jets are set to hold a press conference at 11:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time on Friday, where Toews is expected to announce his retirement. There was a great deal of effort given to returning to the NHL, and he gave the Winnipeg Jets some good leadership in the locker room in his brief time there.

Jonathan Toews Retires After 16 Seasons
Toews was a great story this last season, returning to the NHL after missing two seasons. The 2026 Bill Masterton Trophy finalist missed two seasons due to a long bout of Chronic Immune Response Syndrome and Long COVID that rendered him unable to play hockey at a high enough level. He was able to record 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points in 82 games in the 2025-26 season with the Winnipeg Jets.
Jonathan Toews is hanging up his skates. The Winnipeg Jets have scheduled an 11am CT press conference for Friday (tomorrow), where Toews will announce his retirement.
3 Cups. 1,149 career games. 912 points. 2010 Conn Smythe winner. 2013 Selke winner. 2015 Messier Awards. Great…

Toews will retire with an excellent legacy, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2010 as the Stanley Cup Playoff MVP, as well as leading the Chicago Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups in the span of six years. In his career, he recorded 383 goals and 529 assists in 1,149 games, spending 15 seasons with Chicago and one with Winnipeg.
He was also one of the NHL’s most elite centres, winning 57.54% of his draws, which ranks 15th all-time among all players who have taken at least 1,000 faceoffs. In his most recent season with Winnipeg, he recorded his second-best percentage in faceoffs in a single season, winning 62.09% of draws. That proved he could still be a very proficient centre even at age 38, although his speed and offensive capabilities may have dropped off.
The last question to ask is whether his resume is strong enough to make it to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Given his consistently strong seasons and having served as the Blackhawks’ captain in just his second NHL season. It will probably not be a debate of if, but when he makes it into the Hall of Fame.
One final word is that we will note that the fact that Jonathan Toews retires, at this point is still being called a report. Once the news is finalized, we will be sure to update the situation.
