NHL Rumours: New Front-Runner Established for Vancouver Canucks GM, Sedins Offered Promotion

A decision on the new Vancouver Canucks front office and general manager is expected soon, but other rumours have emerged from the team. This offseason will be an important one in terms of changes in the Canucks’ staff. After the Canucks’ dismal season, general manager Patrik Allvin has been dismissed, and president Jim Rutherford will be stepping down after the NHL Entry Draft. Today’s edition of NHL Rumours will address the latest news around the Canucks’ front office.

NHL Rumours and the Latest Front Office Changes

Rumours: According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, internal decisions on the team’s front office structure could potentially be made on Monday, May 11th. This includes an internal promotion for the Sedin twins. Furthermore, on the DFO Rundown Podcast, Irfaan Gaffar also reported that the scouting department and the assistant GMs could be let go. A decision on the GM will also come down soon, with Patrick Johnston of The Province reporting that Evan Gold is likely to become the next Vancouver GM.

AnalysisWith the departure of Rutherford, there is room for internal promotion. That could include the Sedins, moving into a larger role, if they wish to. If Gold is indeed the next GM, what will be the fate of Canucks AGM Ryan Johnson?

New GM Candidates Down to Two, Evan Gold Likely the Next GM

As reported last week, the Canucks are down to two candidates for the new general manager. Ryan Johnson, current GM of the Abbotsford Canucks and assistant GM of the Vancouver Canucks, and Evan Gold, the assistant GM of the Boston Bruins, are the final candidates. Johnson has been in the Canucks’ organization since 2013, first as a player development consultant. Gold is involved with the Providence Bruins, pro scouting, and has experience in multiple areas around the front office. He also has a background in analytics, which could prove desirable for the team.

The latest reporting by The Province’s Patrick Johnston has indicated that Evan Gold is the front-runner at this point. The Sedin twins could also be moving into hockey operations along with Gold. What could this mean for Johnson? It was rumoured that he could work for the Canucks in another capacity, but it would seem that the Canucks are passing over a long-tenured member of the organization.

Been reported elsewhere, and I have it now: Sedins will be moving into hockey ops roles alongside Evan Gold. Not clear what future roles for current AGMs Cammj Granato and Emilie Castonguay will be.

The Sedins’ Potential Promotion

Further to NHL Rumours, Friedman, on Monday’s 32 Thoughts Podcast, reported that Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin were offered bigger roles within the organization.  “I do think the Canucks have asked the Sedins if they want to take more of a role, and how willing they would be in taking a greater role,” Friedman said. Currently, the Sedins are the player development coaches for the team and have been in that role since 2022. Initially, they were hired in 2021 as special advisors to the GM. The decision of whether they would want to commit to a larger role in the organization is largely up to them. As reported by Johnston, the Sedins will be moving into hockey operations.

A comparable situation to this hiring could be the Toronto Maple Leafs bringing Mats Sundin into the organization. The difference is that the Sedins already work in the organization and also live in the area, whereas Sundin had to move from Sweden. It would be a much simpler transition, should it happen.

Scouting Team on the Hot Seat per NHL Rumours

Gaffar reported on the DFO Rundown Podcast that the Canucks could be making other changes outside of the GM and President role. They may be looking to overhaul the scouting team and make changes to the AGM role. Currently, Todd Harvey is in charge of the scouting team, and Emilie Castonguay and Cammi Granato are the AGMs. 13 amateur scouts and six pro scouts also currently work with the organization, according to the team website.

With a rebuild and new front office staff coming in, it may be wise to “clean house” and have new people running the various aspects of the team. The incoming President, GM, or both of them likely will ultimately have the final say on these matters, including a potential coaching change as well.

An exciting week could be in the cards for the Canucks, so stay tuned.
