The Minnesota Wild Take Advantage of the Sale in South Florida

The Minnesota Wild under general manager Bill Guerin‘s guidance have shown to be players, big players. Landing Quinn Hughes in a huge trade, the Kirill Kaprizov contract, and now, Jeff Petry. Okay, calm your horses. But one thing is for sure, they are loading up for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They also just added Michael McCarron. Just a thought, but don’t be surprised if they take a big swing for some legit middle-six scoring. Yes, many teams have one, but few have one they want to part with. Maybe that Brock Boeser or Blake Coleman type comes to mind. But eh, we are here to talk about Petry.

The Minnesota Wild Trade for Veteran Defenceman Jeff Petry

Okay, first the details. Jeff Petry goes to the Minnesota Wild from the Florida Panthers. He was only with Florida for part of a season after signing in July for just one year at $775K. At 38 years old, this will be one of last cracks at a cup. Something never to be taken for granted. Teams will assuredly have to contend with Minnie in a very tough Central Division.

On the trade specifically, the seventh-round draft pick becomes a fifth-round pick if the Wild win two rounds in the playoffs this year.

On the campaign for Petry, let’s compared his season numbers with some career averages. Over his career, he would have eight goals and 23 assists over an 82-game average. This season, in a reduced role, he has eight assists through 58 games. His ice time of less than 15 minutes a game is the lowest of his career, and by quite a margin. It is interesting even in his rookie season, he was over 20 minutes a game. 13 seasons in the NHL he was above 20 minutes a game. However, in Detroit it dipped to under 19, then this year just 14:51. He played four years in the playoffs, so he brings that experience. As a note, his playoff appearances were all with the Montreal Canadiens (48 career games).
