Edmonton Oilers Re-Signing Versatile Forward

Less than 24 hours removed from losing in the Stanley Cup Final, the Edmonton Oilers had gone to work preparing for next season. Now, today on the day of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, it has been finalized. With the reports confirmed, forward Trent Frederic has agreed to an extension to remain with the Oilers for eight years.

Oilers Re-Sign Frederic

As mentioned above, the deal is for eight years. Furthermore, the average annual salary will be $3.85 million.

The Oilers acquired Frederic in a deadline trade. Due to injury, Frederic only played one regular-season game for the Oilers. However, in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Frederick played in all of Edmonton’s 22 playoff games. His only goal came in round one. However, he made it count, scoring the series-winning goal in Game 6.

In 338 career games, Frederic has scored 55 goals and recorded 109 points.

Oilers Re-Sign Frederic Fast

There was speculation Frederic had suitors in the free-agent market. However, the Oilers put that talk to rest quickly with the extension.

Frederic was one of many Oiler forwards with expiring contracts. It is unlikely they will re-sign all of them, the Kane trade to Vancouver as an example. However, by locking up Frederic, they have a young piece in their core that will hopefully keep them in contention for the Stanley Cup.

Role with Oilers

Frederic played on the third line with the Oilers. As the second line has already been shook up this summer, the Oilers forward line combinations will change. Frederic could be facing a promotion to the second line. Frederic is capable of scoring goals. Furthermore, playing on a line that includes Leon Draisaitl at centre will help increase Frederic’s production.

It does seem likely Frederic will get moved to the second line. Draisaitl’s recent linemates, Evander Kane and Kasperi Kapanen, will change for 2025-26. The Oilers have already potentially created the opening for Frederic.
