Seven-Year Veteran Headed to Edmonton Oilers

The Boston Bruins have traded Trent Frederic to the Edmonton Oilers in a three team deal also involving the New Jersey Devils. The seven-year veteran switches teams for the first time in his NHL career.

Trent Frederic Traded

The Oilers also received forward Max Jones as well as unsigned draft choice Petr Hauser. In exchange, the Bruins are acquiring a 2nd round pick which originally belonged to the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton’s fourth-round pick in 2026 and Max Wanner. The Devils, who were also involved in the deal, acquired unsigned draft choice Shane Lachance.

Frederic, 26 years old, has played in 337 games for the Bruins. He has scored 55 goals and added 54 assists. Frederic’s best season came last year, when he scored 18 goals and recorded 40 points.

How This Impacts the Oilers

Despite Frederic not replicating his success from last year, he still provides an offensive boost to the Oilers. He is someone who can provide offensive depth while adding grit to the Oilers lineup.

Frederic is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see if Oilers look to extend Frederic. Whether or not they do could depend on how he performs for the team.

Bruins Elect to Sell

The Bruins may not be having the success they have enjoyed each of the last two seasons. However, they are still in the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. Keeping that in mind, it makes the decision to trade Frederic a curious one.

However, the Bruins have looked into an extension for Frederic, but no deal could be reached. As a result, interest grew in the possibility of trading Frederic. By trading Frederic, the Bruins are getting value instead of losing him in free agency and getting nothing in return. It is not the outcome the Bruins would have preferred, but it is the best outcome given the situation.
