The Washington Capitals have made some news on this Monday afternoon. Word came down that goalie Logan Thompson signed a contract extension of six years worth $35.1 million. This deal has an average salary cap hit of $5.85 million per season. The contract runs until the end of the 2030-31 season.

Logan Thompson Signed to Multi-Year Extension
Thompson has played for the Vegas Golden Knights and the Capitals over his five-year NHL career. The 27-year-old is having a career season in his first campaign with the Capitals. He’s totaled a 22-2-3 record with a 2.09 goals-against-average and .925 save percentage. The Calgary native also has two shutouts so far in the 2024-25 season.
Thompson has a career mark of 78-34-14 with a GAA of 2.55 and .915 save percentage. He also has a racked up a career total of six shutouts. The veteran goalies has worked his way from the WHL, USports, the ECHL and AHL to become an NHL starter.
He made his NHL debut in March 2021 against the Minnesota Wild. Thompson was traded from Vegas in late June 2024 to get a shot at a starting spot with Washington. It seems that Thompson has taken the ball and ran with it.
What it Means
Thompson is getting rewarded for his great play. However, this does raise a question of what the team will do with Charlie Lindgren. Washington said that they would love to keep both. However, it could be hard to make the money work.
Thompson’s great play has made people take notices. However, he was shockingly left off Team Canada’s roster for the upcoming Four Nations Tournament. He may have been left off the roster, but is making a statement with his great play.
Washington has been a great story so far this season. Many feel the offence has been part of it, but the improved play in net has played a large hand in everything.
