Detroit Red Wings Re-Sign RFA Defenceman

NHL Rumours; Moritz Seider signed

The Detroit Red Wings have checked off one of their main things on their to-do list. News broke that the Red Wings have gotten Moritz Seider signed to a new contract. The deal is for seven years and $59.85 million. This contract runs through the end of the 2030-31 season and carries an average cap hit of $8.55 million per season.

Mortiz Seider Signed to New Deal

Seider has only played for the Red Wings in this three seasons in the NHL. The German defender netted a career-high nine goals and also handed out 33 assists for 42 points in 82 games. Seider had a Corsi for of 44.7 and a relative Corsi of -3.4. He’s not missed a game in his three seasons since being a full-time member of the Red Wings roster.

The Zell, Germany native has 21 goals and 113 assists for 134 points in 246 career games. Detroit took Seider in the first round, sixth overall of the 2019 NHL Draft. Seider also earned the 2022 Calder Trophy for being the league’s top rookie.

The young blueliner won the DEL title with Adler Mannheim in 2019. However, he also earned honours in Sweden as the SHL Defenceman of the Year with Rogle BK. He’s also played for his native country at both the junior and the senior level.

What it Means

Seider is one of the cornerstones of the Red Wings defence and General Manager Steve Yzerman knows this. The young defenceman is a physical force on the blue line. However, he’s also managed to stay durable despite playing a physical style of game.

Detroit just missed out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but there’s some hope for the future. Seider is hoping to play a hand in the Red Wings revival, but the team knows it’s a tough division in the Atlantic. This year is a pivotal season for Detroit, but Seider will be around for the foreseeable future.
