Pair of Philadelphia Flyers Extensions May Be on the Table

Rumour: The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz talked about possible extensions for Cam York and Tyson Foerster this coming season. This came up in a recent Flyers mailbag hosted by The Athletic.

Analysis: Kurz mentions that both players could get in-season deals. However, the key may be who gets out to a faster start. Both players are pending restricted free agents, but can sign deals at any time. This is the case with any pending free agent going into the last year of a deal on July 1.

Giving out mid-season extensions for young players is something Flyers General Manager Daniel Briere has done in his tenure. It was the case for Owen Tippett and it may be that way for York and Forester.

Briere has been proactive at trying to lock up the young Flyers core. There’s lots of promise in their young players with names like Matvei Michkov ready to debut soon.

Who Gets the Extension First?

Kurz mentions that York might be the player that gets the first crack at an extension. He’s a bit older at 23 and has more experience. It’s likely that Briere takes care of this deal first, so he can lock down another experienced youngster.

York had a breakout campaign last season with 10 goals and 30 points in 82 games. The former University of Michigan product will likely eat up a lot of minutes this season for Philadelphia.

However, don’t discount Forester’s contributions. Head coach John Tortorella has relied on the 22-year-old since his own breakout season last year. Forester scored 20 goals in his first full season with the big club.

Tortorella could continue to give the former Barrie Colts standout more chances and improve on that 17:16 of average ice time from last season. That added responsibility could lead to Forester also netting a contract extension.

What’s Does it Mean?

The Flyers surprisingly contended for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot last season before falling off at the end. Expectations may be lowered with the improvements to other clubs and worries about regression.

However, there’s plenty of promise on this Flyers roster. It might just take a little bit of time for the team to become a cohesive unit.

Both York and Forester seem to be key cogs in the wheel for this young squad. It’s only a matter of time before the duo gets a well-deserved raise for their strong play.
