Former Los Angeles Kings Goaltender Signs New Contract

Joonas Korpisalo has a new contract in place. He has signed a five-year deal with the Ottawa Senators. Korpisalo will have an AAV of $4 million. After being moved around last season, he is staying in one spot.

Korpisalo Inks New Contract

After being on the move this past season, Korpisalo can settle down and get ready for the new season. Despite the Columbus Blue Jackets being a poor defensive team that lacked structure, Korpisalo was a strong goaltender in the net. Korpisalo was good for a 3.17 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage. And even though Pheonix Copley was steady in the net, upgrading was a wise idea. In addition, Korpisalo proved that was no fluke performance in the net. His numbers got better in Los Angeles as well. Once the trade was done, Korpisalo finished with 2.13 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. His goals saved above expected was through the roof with 12.7.

However, things did not go as planned in the playoffs. The red-hot Edmonton Oilers offence got the best of the Kings and Korpisalo. He finished with a 3.77 goals against average and allowed 22 goals. His save percentage dropped below .900 for the first time all year.

Why This Contract Makes Sense

The Joonas Korpisalo contract makes sense. He is a reliable goalie and is a big body. Standing at 6’3 and weighing 193 pounds, he is tough to beat. But going forward this makes sense for both the player and the team. Korpisalo can settle in and be a contributor in the crease. He has spent his career with just two teams. In addition, he comes with years of experience and two years of playoff hockey under his belt. Finding starting goaltending is never an easy thing to do. He may not be the flashiest name on the free agent list, but is worth the deal.
