Update on New York Rangers Coach Search

Rumour: Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on Saturday’s Hockey Night in Canada’s Headlines segment said the Rangers may be zeroing in on a name. Friedman said that the Rangers might be leaning towards Peter Laviolette as their new coach. The insider he would be named before the the start of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday if the Blueshirts go in that direction.

Laviolette was most recently the Washington Capitals head coach before parting ways. The Franklin, Mass. native coached the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup in 2005. He’s also made the Cup Final in 2009 with the Philadelphia Flyers and 2017 with the Nashville Predators. Laviolette has won 752 regular season games during his long career and is one of the most decorated American coaches in NHL history.

Laviolette does well in letting his defenceman join offensive rushes as long as they come back and handle defensive responsibilities. Adam Fox and K’Andre Miller would likely love playing under Laviolette if he implements his desired system.

There’s a world of expectations on the Blueshirts this coming season. New York wants to get its hands on the Stanley Cup since 1994. Drury swung for the fences, but didn’t get a home run. Hopefully Laviolette can get the Blueshirts back among the league’s top contenders.
