NHL Rumours: Vancouver Canucks Forward Extension Talks

Elias Pettersson extension; NHL rumours; NHL predictions

It’s time for another round of NHL rumours for the middle of the work week. We’re in the middle of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but that hasn’t stopped the teams that didn’t make it from working on their rosters. The Vancouver Canucks anticipate a busy off-season and want to work on securing some of their pieces. One of those players is a high-scoring Swedish winger. This edition of NHL rumours looks at the Elias Pettersson extension talks that can start after July 1.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Elias Pettersson Extension Talks Update

Rumour: The Donnie & Dhaliwal Show had Pettersson’s agent, J.P. Barry, on the program to discuss Pettersson’s extension talks. Barry said that talks will likely start in the summer, but doesn’t know how long they’ll take. There were a few examples of different time frames with other Barry clients from past negotiations. The agent said talks could go as quick as they did for Mathew Barzal (four months) or Filip Forsberg (a year.)

Pettersson’s contract runs out at the end of the next season and he’s a restricted free agent at the end of the deal. The 24-year-old is currently getting $7.35 million and hopes to cash in with a decent-sized raise. Pettersson did say that he likes playing in Vancouver and hopes to stay.

Impact of Elias Pettersson Extension

General Patrik Allvin will do what he can to keep the Sundsvall, Sweden native in the fold. Vancouver management probably doesn’t want to risk the chance of Pettersson getting an offer sheet. Signing the 102-point scorer sometime in 2023-24 will be critical.

The Canucks played much better after Rick Tocchet was inserted behind the bench. Pettersson will be key for the Canucks if they have designs on returning to the Stanley Cup Playoffs soon. There’s hope the cap number for 2024-25 will finally see some larger growth to accommodate Petterson’s deserved raise.
