NHL Rumours: Ottawa Senators Forward RFA Options

Alex DeBrincat contract

It’s time for another edition of NHL rumours for the middle of the work week. We’re nearing the end of the regular season and teams are trying to work on their future lineups. Teams are trying to lock down their restricted free agents before they hit the market. There are a ton of quality RFAs that could be the target of offer sheets or trades. Today’s NHL rumours looks at a possible Alex DeBrincat contract for the Ottawa Senators.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

A Look at An Alex DeBrincat Contract

Rumour: Sportsnet’s Luke Fox took a look at the top 12 RFAs in the coming off-season. There are names like Pierre-Luc Dubois, Timo Meier and others on the list and so is the young Senators forward. DeBrincat came over from the Chicago Blackhawks before the season and the Farmington Hills, Mich. native has been solid. The 25-year-old has 21 goals in his first season in the Canadian capitals.

DeBrincat does have a one-year, $9 million qualifying offer waiting for him if the two sides can’t agree on a new deal. He is also arbitration eligible if he wants to exercise those rights. The American winger is in the final year of a deal that sees him make $6.4 million.

Impact of An Alex DeBrincat Contract

The player seems to hold the hammer over Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. DeBrincat said he does like playing in Ottawa, but he would love to get a deal that sees him get a nice raise. He told agent Jeff Jackson that there won’t be contract talks until the end of the season.

Dorion doesn’t want to lose DeBrincat after just one season, but he’ll have some room to make a deal happen. However, anything else this summer will likely have to go on the back burner. The Senators want to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs and keeping the young winger is a high priority.
