Ottawa Senators Goalie Out Three Weeks

Cam Talbot Injury

Ottawa Senators goalie Cam Talbot will be out for three weeks with a lower-body injury. Senators coach D.J. Smith announced the news Wednesday after Talbot was a late-minute scratch prior to the Senators five to zero loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday.

Cam Talbot Out Three Weeks with Lower-Body Injury

Cam Talbot’s injury came following his last start, a five to two win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. Talbot was slated to dress on Monday against the Blackhawks but was a late scratch. Young goaltender Mads Sogaard took over between the pipes but didn’t fare so well in the Senators loss to Chicago.

This is not the first time that Talbot has been out with an injury this season. Talbot was out of the lineup for almost a month starting at the end of January. Prior to his current injury, Talbot was leading the Senators on a five-game winning streak. Talbot is in his tenth NHL season and has spent time with the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, and now Ottawa. This season Talbot has a 2.85 goals against average and .905 save percentage. While his play has been solid when healthy, staying healthy has not been as consistent.

What This Means for the Ottawa Senators

Talbot’s injury could not have come at a worse time for the Senators. After a recent surge, the Senators find themselves five points behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for the final wild card playoff spot in the eastern conference. Coach D.J. Smith relies heavily on Talbot but with an anticipated absence of three weeks, and an injured Anton Forsberg, the Senators will have to make their late playoff push utilizing younger netminders. This timeline should have Talbot back shortly before the playoffs for him to get some playing time assuming the Senators can make the push.
