Calgary Flames With More Off-Season Moves to Come

Calgary Flames Off-Season

Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving was dealt a tough hand this off-season. His competitive team was falling apart. Star forward Johnny Gaudreau reportedly turned down a monster contract offered to him and took less to relocate to Columbus, and Matthew Tkachuk informed the team he intended to test free agency in a year, only looking to sign a one-year extension. Given that, Treliving has done an excellent job keeping his team competitive. And it appears the Calgary Flames off-season is not done quite yet.

Calgary Flames Off-Season Not Quite Done

Rumour: According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Brad Treliving may not be done and could want to add another forward before training camp. Friedman lists Evan Rodrigues as a possibility.

Analysis: The Flames have one of the best defence groups in the league. However, their forward group last season was heavily carried by their top line. With only one-third of that line remaining, Treliving seems to have correctly assessed the biggest need for his team. The roster still needs to acquire forward depth. The Flames recently added centreman and Stanley Cup champion Nazem Kadri, but the team will still need more help up front if they are to be a true cup contender.

Evan Rodrigues had an excellent 2021-22 season. He put up great defensive results and drove play for his team offensively. Rodrigues’ biggest flaw last season was his finishing. He scored 19 goals but generated a total of 24.1 ixG according to Evolving Hockey. This could actually work to Calgary’s benefit, however. Coming off a one-year, $1,000,000 deal, the Flames could get Rodrigues at a value contract. He has a lot of great qualities in his play that are traditionally undervalued in contract negotiations.

Another forward depth option could be Sonny Milano, who was recently not qualified by the Anaheim Ducks. Milano is an excellent passer that generates a lot of shot assists. He had a respectable defensive year as well, and could really help out in a middle-six role for the Flames.

These are two excellent forwards that could help round out the Calgary Flames off-season.
