Andrew Copp Gets a New Contract with Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings signed free agent forward Andrew Copp. The new contract for Andrew Copp comes in at five years and $5.625 per year. Understandably, this is a big signing for both the player and the team.

Andrew Copp Gets New Deal

Over his eight-year NHL career, Copp has played for the Winnipeg Jets and New York Rangers. He has put up 82 goals and 120 assists for 202 career points in 483 career games. Winnipeg originally drafted

Last season he scored 21 goals and 32 assists for 53 points in 72 games. He also added 16 penalty minutes for the 2021-22 campaign. His possession numbers were 53.8 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 3.7. Copp netted eight goals with the Rangers after being traded from the Jets at the deadline. He was part of the Rangers’ big depth makeover joining players like Frank Vatrano and Tyler Motte.

Copp scored six Stanley Cup Playoff goals this season in 20 games, which were both bests for him. The Ann Arbor, Mich. native was also a standout college hockey player at the University of Michigan. He’s also represented his native United States at various levels from the Worlds to the World Juniors.

What This Means for the Future

Copp is a versatile forward that can play in the centre spot or on the wing. He finally broke into the 20-goal column for the first time this season. The 27-year-old was a vital part of the Rangers’ push into the Eastern Conference Final. He was able to move throughout the lineup when head coach Gerard Gallant needed him. Copp is the type of player that is solid at both ends of the ice. He is an asset and will get paid like one.

Copp did cool off as the post-season went along, but he is a key player for any team that he’s on. Being able to play multiple forward slots gives him an edge and makes him a valuable piece. In signing with the Red Wings, Copp returns to his home state of Michigan. His experience and versatility will be extremely useful on a rebuilding team looking to take the next step.
