Brady Tkachuk has been named captain of the Ottawa Senators. The team made the official announcement earlier today. Tkachuk was one of the multiple alternate captains the team had before the “C” was sewn onto his sweater.

Only his fourth year in the league, this is an incredible honour for Tkachuk. His four years have been spent with a rebuilding Ottawa team that has struggled mightily. However, through his leadership and some new additions, the Senators are looking to return to their former glory.

As for Tkachuk himself, he’s been incredibly consistent. Averaging between .63 and .69 points over the last three seasons (excluding this season’s small sample size), he’s helped Ottawa put wins in the win column. So far this season, he has four points in seven games, averaging over 17 and a half minutes of ice time per game. In his career with Ottawa, he’s played 205 games, scored 62 times, and dished out 67 assists for 129 points. He finished fifth in the Calder Trophy voting in his rookie season.

What This Means For the Franchise

Finally naming a captain is a win for the Senators, especially with Brady Tkachuk as the captain. While he’s still young (only 22 years old!), he’s already proving he is a fantastic leader. His gameplay speaks for itself, and his ability to wrangle a line and help other players succeed is remarkable. A signature ability of a captain is they usually are not the best player on the ice, rather, one that inspires and pushes their teammates to be better. Tkachuk is a perfect example of this combination. While the Senators are still coming out of their rebuilding phase, Tkachuk will be one of the key players that lead them back to the playoffs.

From a family of hockey players, the Tkachuk’s have another reason to brag about their son.
