New York Rangers Extend Norris Trophy Winner Adam Fox

Adam Fox

The New York Rangers have announced they have signed the reigning Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox to a seven-year contract worth $66.5 million. The contract carries a salary-cap hit of $9.5 million.

Adam Fox Gets His New Contract

It was only a matter of time before Adam Fox got his money from the Rangers. Many had speculated that Fox was going to get over $10 million a season. He got darn close with $9.5 million a season. The market was being set during the off-season with all these defencemen getting over $9 million a season. Fox with a Norris Trophy to his name was going to command that and more once he hit free agency. Fox’s contract is identical to the contract Charlie McAvoy signed with the Boston Bruins a few weeks ago. Now the Rangers have a core piece of their defence signed to a long-term deal as they continue to move in the right direction.

Fox has been a monster since signing with the Rangers. During his first season with the team, playing just 70 games, he registered 42 points (eight goals and 34 assists) with a plus 22. He followed that up by setting career highs with 47 points and 42 assists in 55 games becoming the second Rangers player (Brian Leetch) to win the Norris Trophy as the best defenceman. Last season, while his goal total was down to five, he would have broken that if there was an 82 game regular season.  And Fox has continued that stellar pace into this season with nine points (two goals and seven assists). Again his amongst the team leaders in plus/minus.

Fox was originally drafted by the Calgary Flames in the third round 66th overall, the Flames traded him along with Dougie Hamilton to the Carolina Hurricanes. From there, the Hurricanes traded his rights to the Rangers in April of 2019.

Moving Forward

As mentioned before, Fox won the Norris Trophy last season, even though the Rangers missed the playoffs. However, if you looked at his play besides the numbers, Fox was the best defenceman in the game. Having a partner like Ryan Lindgren is definitely helping Fox flourish with the Rangers. It does not matter who the coach is, Fox is a bonafide star in the league. He makes everything look so easy on defence. And now the Rangers have an anchor to their defence. Fox and Lindgren make up their top unit and having the right partner means everything.

Adam Fox made a name for himself last season, look for him to cement his name in the coming years winning multiple Norris trophies.
