Logan Stankoven, Wyatt Johnston Signed by Dallas Stars

Johnston and Stankoven come from the CHL — Johnson from the Windsor Spitfires, and Stankoven from the Kamloops Blazers. Both players excelled in their respective seasons, earning easy picks by the Stars in the 2021 NHL Draft.  He scored 30 points in 53 games with the Spitfires in the 2019-20 season. The COVID-19 pandemic shut down the OHL season, thus limiting his ability to play in his drat year. Despite this, Johnston made an appearance in the IIHF World Junior Tournament, earning four points in seven games. He was selected in the first round at 23rd overall in the 2021 NHL Draft.

Stankoven, on the other hand, registered 10 points in six games with the Blazers in the 2020-21 season. He ended the IIHF World Juniors with a tournament-leading +14 rating, helping Team Canada capture the gold. In 73 games with the Blazers, Stankoven obtained 59 points in 73 games in the WHL. He was selected in the second round at 47th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft.

What This Means for the Team

This is a very promising sign for the Stars’ prospect pool. Having both Johnston and Stankoven locked in is a sign of confidence from the organization. While both will return to the CHL to continue their development, they’ll leave knowing they have NHL contracts with their names on them. In all likelihood, both Johnston and Stankoven will play a few preseason games. This will give the Stars a chance to see what their capabilities are at this level and what they’ll need to improve. With enough hard work, both Johnston and Stankoven can make a case for themselves in the 2022-23 NHL season.
