The Montreal Canadiens have signed star prospect Cole Caufield to an entry-level contract as the NCAA postseason nears completion. The now-former Wisconsin Badger has a huge ceiling and will provide a great deal of excitement to Habs fans very soon. The team announced the official signing Saturday night.

Canadiens Sign Cole Caufield

The one thing every fan should know if they don’t already is that Caufield is an absolute dynamo on offence. He’s been one of the best players in collegiate hockey since he joined his program in 2019-20. He has 47 goals and 85 points in 66 regular-season games and is a contender for the Hobey Baker award given to the top player in college hockey. There is very little for the Wisconsin native to accomplish at the amateur level.

The Canadiens originally drafted Caufield 15th overall in the 2019 Draft as perhaps the biggest steal from that year. Despite being just 5’7″, he is a pure scorer of the highest calibre. He was a member of a superb U.S. Development Team that ranks among the best in program history. Caufield is an excellent skater with an outstanding shot. He uses his skills to avoid the opposition and cancel out the potential disadvantage of his size. He should fit perfectly in the modern NHL that focuses on speed and edgework above physicality and grit.

Caufield’s Future In Montreal

The only real question with Caufield is if he will debut this year or wait. While we’ve seen some recent rookies like Cale Makar dominate right away, just as many struggle in their first professional season. One only has to look as far as Alexis Lafreniere and Jack Hughes to find examples of star prospects who don’t excel immediately. The good thing is that Caufield joins a quality organization that can afford to bring him along slowly. He has elite talent, but the team doesn’t need him to be a key figure right now.
