Toronto Maple Leafs Lose Goaltender Jack Campbell to Leg Injury

Jack Campbell Injury

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell will be out of the lineup for two weeks with a leg injury. During their game against the Calgary Flames over the weekend there was a pile-up on top of him during the game. This is the likely cause of his injury.

Leafs Lose Campbell to Injury

Head coach Sheldon Keefe told the media today that the 29-year-old will miss two weeks due to the injury. In the same comment, he announced that Joe Woll will be joining the team on their taxi squad, as well as having Michael Hutchinson as their back up for the time being. So far this season Campbell has started in two games and won both of them. Through the small sample size, he has put up a .923 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against-average. Campbell was acquired by the team last season at the beginning of February from the Los Angeles Kings. He appeared in six games with the Leafs last season, splitting his record with three wins and three losses, one coming in overtime or a shootout. Through those games, he put up a 2.63 goals-against-average and a .915 save percentage.

What This Means for the Team

Jack Campbell had only played in two games and isn’t the most elite goalie, so replacing him with Hutchinson isn’t too big of an issue. He’s a capable goalie in a backup role, and that’s exactly what he’ll be doing by backing up Frederik AndersenLast season with the Leafs and the Colorado Avalanche he played 16 games and put up a .888 save percentage with a 3.47 goals-against-average. As for Woll, he played last season for the team’s AHL affiliate. Through his 32 games, he posted a 3.75 goals-against average and an .880 save percentage. Woll, 22, was the team’s third-round pick in the 2016 NHL entry draft.
