We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for October 24th, featuring Patrick Roy.

Patrick Roy Tops Goalie Games Mark

2002: The Colorado Avalanche goalie passes Terry Sawchuk for the most games played by a goalie. Roy plays in his 972nd career game in Colorado’s 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. He makes 27 saves in the victory over the Coyotes.

Roy would go on to make 1,029 career appearances before retiring after the 2002-03 season. He would hold the appearance record until New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur would break it. Roy enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 in his first year of eligibility.

Other Notable Events

1945: Red Hamill scores two unassisted goals in the Chicago Black Hawks 5-4 win over the Boston Bruins. It’s the only game in earliest opening night since 1917-18.

1972: Jacques Lemaire gets his third career hat trick in the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 win over the New York Islanders. It’s the first hat trick at the Nassau Coliseum.

1976: Bobby Orr is the first defenceman scores twice to become the first defenceman to reach 900 career points. Orr’s goals lead Chicago to a 7-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues, but he’d only score once more before missing the rest of the season and next with knee injuries.

1981: Mike Bossy is the first Islanders player to score 250 career goals. He reaches the milestone in his 315th game, which is the fastest at the time. Bossy also adds a pair of assists in a 6-4 win over the Washington Capitals. He would retire exactly seven years later after back problems. Bossy would finish with 1,126 points (573 goals, 553 assists) in 752 games.

1987: Pittsburgh Penguins star Mario Lemieux scores a hat trick in a 5-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres. It’s the ninth career hat trick for Lemieux, who is only one month into his fourth season.

2015: The Montreal Canadiens break the regular season record for most regulation wins to start a campaign. Carey Price makes 49 saves in the Habs’ 5-3 victory over the rival Toronto Maple Leafs. Montreal starts the season 9-0-0 and that’s one more of the 1975-76 Sabres.

2019: Cam Atkinson scores in overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. It’s the eighth one-goal game for Columbus.
