The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that centre and team captain Sidney Crosby is sidelined for three to four weeks after having wrist surgery. Pittsburgh officials announced the news early Tuesday morning.

Sidney Crosby Undergoes Surgery

There’s no specific time that Crosby got the injury. However, he only scored two goals and three points in the qualifying round. He and the rest of the Penguins offence struggled in the four-game upset by the Montreal Canadiens. Crosby and the Penguins were eliminated on his 33rd birthday on August 7 with a 2-0 loss.

Last season, Crosby scored 16 goals and 31 assists for 47 points in 41 games. The Cole Harbuour, Nova Scotia native added 15 penalty minutes as well. His possession numbers were 54.2 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 4.8. Both of those numbers were close to his career normal numbers.

Over his 15-year NHL career, Crosby has played only for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has 462 goals and 801 assists for 1,263 career points in 984 career games. Pittsburgh originally drafted him first overall in the 2006 NHL Draft.

Injuries derailed the former Hart and Art Ross Trophy winner as he missed half of training camp with an undisclosed injury. He then suffered another core muscle injury that put him out of commission for a good chunk of the season.

What This Means for the Future

Crosby joins Evgeni Malkin and Zach Ashton-Reese as other Penguins that had surgeries. Malkin underwent elbow surgery that will sideline him three to four weeks. Ashton-Reese got left shoulder surgery that will keep him out for six months. He’s expected to be out for the start of training camp in November.

The Penguins have already made changes this off-season as they acquired Kasperi Kapanen from the Toronto Maple Leafs. General manager Jim Rutherford is expected to make a decision on if he’ll choose Tristan Jarry or Matt Murray as the team’s top goaltender.
