Arizona Coyotes Back to the Playoffs With NHL Qualifying Series Win

It’s been a frustrating eight years for fans of the team, as they floundered out of a playoff position until recently when head coach Rick Tocchet took over. There has been plenty of drama and misfortune following this franchise. For now, that is all in the past as the team embarks on its next step in the postseason play. As it turns out, they will be up against the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the playoffs with the start date/time to be determined.

Again, the first game of a five-game series is very important and that’s why if you win it you have an 82 percent chance of winning the series. In a fairly wild first game, the Yotes pulled it out 4-3. They managed to protect a three-goal lead (perhaps protect is not a good word) and come away with the win. The key had to be Michael Grabners shorthanded goal. It didn’t hurt that Darcy Kuemper made 40 saves to keep his team competitive.

The Coyotes always content with hanging loose with a lead almost blew it. Game Two was all Nashville as they built a four-goal lead and the Coyotes scored two meaningless late goals.

Then, it got interesting. The all-important Game Three. The Desert Dogs erupted for four goals including a nifty tally by Conor Garland who had been silent up until then. The pass from Derek Stepan has to be credited with some veteran skill. It allowed Garland to get open as he drew three defenders towards him only to dish it off to Garland.

No chance at Lafreniere, but This is Better

Getting to the playoffs is every team’s goal and now the Coyotes have achieved it. The 24-team play-in certainly gave them the opportunity to get there. Now, they play a really talented, young, and fast team in the first round.

Who needs Lafreniere?

Nashville Predators Couldn’t Solve Kuemper in NHL Qualifying Series

The Nashville Predators didn’t play badly, they just couldn’t break through the wall known as Darcy Kuemper. They had 152 shots on Kuemper and still only had 11 get by him. That’s gotta be frustrating, to say the least.

The Preds got some scoring from Viktor Arvidsson and Filip Forsberg who each collected three goals in the four games. Ryan Johansen also pitched in five points. So, the Nashville club goes away empty and still has a shot at Alexis Lafreniere.

Juuse Saros in goal just didn’t have the goods to take his team further. Any hockey follower must wonder what the Predators need to do to move forward. Roman Josi played a marvellous series, but their offence and penalty kill needs work.

One key play in Game Three negated a goal by Kyle Turris when the Coyotes challenged the play contending it was offside. The goal would have given the Preds the lead in a 1-1 game. Instead, it was called back due to Matt Duchene entering the zone too soon.

It just seems the usual bad luck Coyotes finally got a break and they used it to help win the game.
