NHL Trade Deadline Deals: Real Hockey Talk #24

NHL Trade Deadline Deals

This Saturday’s February 29, 2020 Real Hockey Talk show takes place at Valle Luna Mexican and Cantinas in Phoenix, AZ. Along with Greg IsaacDave Isaac, and William Grigsby from lastwordonhockey.com, we are back! This is podcast #24 for your listening pleasure. Today we cover many of the 31 trades that transpired on Monday February 24th. Which teams improved with the NHL trade deadline deals and who didn’t?

NHL Trade Deadline Deals – Who Got Better?

We cover some of the trades NHL teams transacted on Deadline day. Of course, William wrote an article on lastwordonhockey.com detailing why the Arizona Coyotes stayed put at the deadline with only one AHL player deal. Doubtful that will help the Desert Dogs climb into a playoff spot and stay there. We also discuss some of the inner workings of the Coyotes organization.

What may happen if the Coyotes fail to get to the playoffs for the eighth straight season? Will John Chayka be relieved of his duties? How about head coach Rick Tocchet? Will the Coyotes take care of their business and not depend on the other teams helping them? Lots of questions to be answered about the local team and their playoff fate.

Other teams such as the Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes improved their rosters by making deals. Another team who cashed in was the New York Islanders who landed Jean-Gabriel Pageau. Then, the Florida Panthers traded Vincent Trocheck to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Somehow, the Vegas Golden Knights were able to acquire goalie Robin Lehner from the Chicago Blackhawks giving them a great one-two tandem in the net.

Playoffs Push

We chat about the teams who made moves and how it affects their playoff hopes. William thinks that the Arizona Coyotes could have made a move or two to assist them in getting to the playoffs. As it stands now they will need to reach at a minimum of 90-91 points to reach the postseason. What could affect team’s chances more than anything is how tough a schedule they have. The Coyotes have a light schedule in March and that could affect their energy level going into the last 15 games or so.

Who Will Win the Awards

We all agree it will come down to Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes getting the rookie of the year award. Dominik Kubalík of the Chicago Blackhawks with 29 goals has to be considered also.

Who will the Norris Trophy go to? We concur that John Carlson will be the favourite to walk away with the hardware. Who will win the Adams award as best head coach. Listen to what we think.
