The Canadiens completed a trade Monday with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers acquire centre Nate Thompson in exchange for a 2021 fifth-round draft selection.

In Thompson, the Flyers get a seasoned veteran who will add plenty of depth to any forward group. This season, he scored four goals and ten assists for 14 points, adding 21 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 47.9 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -7.9. Compared to last season, Thompson is at the same pace. With 13 points, five goals and eight assists. Nate is playing just as well, if not better.
Over his 13-year NHL career, Thompson has played for seven different teams, most recently he has played for the Los Angeles Kings, Ottawa Senators, and the Montreal Canadians. In that time, he has 62 goals and 93 assists for 155 career points in 760 career games. He was originally drafted in the sixth round, 183rd overall of the 2003 NHL draft by the Boston Bruins.
What This Means for the Future
Moving forward, Thompson provides depth and consistency in the face-off dot. Averaging 55.1 percent in the face-off circle, Thompson is a guy who one can rely on to win big defensive draws. Along with being a sound defensive player, while Thompson is on the ice his team has maintained a 98.8 percent save percentage while his team is at even strength.
His veteran leadership should also provide a solid boost to this Flyers team. He joins a well-weathered leadership core that also consists of players like Claude Giroux, Sean Couturier, and Jakub Voracek. For such a cheap price, it’s a great depth pickup for Philly.
