Detroit Red Wings Trade Mike Green to the Edmonton Oilers

The Detroit Red Wings have agreed to trade Mike Green to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Kyle Brodziak and a conditional fourth-round pick.

Red Wings Trade Mike Green to Oilers

In Mike Green, the Oilers obtain a veteran puck-moving defenceman. He has scored three goals and eight assists for 11 points, adding 32 minutes in penalties this year. His possession numbers are 45.9 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -1.9 percent. Those totals are lacking compared to last season, where he scored five goals, 21 assists for 26 points.

Over his 15-year NHL career Green has played for the Red Wings and Washington Capitals. In that time, he has 150 goals and 351 assists for 501 career points in 878 career games. He was originally drafted in the first round; 29th overall of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Capitals.

What This Means for the Future

Upon arrival in Detroit, Green’s point production began decreasing. Due to a combination of father time approaching and a very sub-par roster, Green is not the same player. In the past two seasons, Green played 84 of the possible 164 games. Regardless, Green still provides plenty of intangibles both on and off the ice. A 15-year veteran helps in securing any back end.

Moving forward, Mike Green may be on his way out of the NHL soon. Until that happens, Green is the perfect player to slide into the bottom four on defence, creating both peace of mind and depth for any defensive-core. These are both things that Edmonton is definitely looking for, after Oscar Klefbom suffered an injury in mid-February. Klefbom was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury that will hold him out for a few weeks. This left a hole in the Oilers defence, one that Green will help fill until Klefbom returns soon.
