The Boston Bruins announced that winger Marcus Johansson is sidelined indefinitely with an upper-body injury. It was diagnosed as a lung contusion and Johansson will be re-evaluated in one week.

Marcus Johansson Injured

Johansson was hurt in the second period of Tuesday’s game vs Carolina Hurricanes. Johnannson took a huge hit from Hurricanes forward Micheal Ferland. The Bruins center would end up leaving the game later in the period.

So far this season, Johansson has scored 12 goals and 16 assists for 28 points to go along with eight minutes in penalties in 52 games played. His possession numbers were 49.3 percent Corsi-for and a relative Corsi of +1.0.

Over his 9-year NHL career, Johansson has played for the Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins. He has 119 goals and 213 assists for 332 career points in 582 career games. He was originally drafted by the Capitals 24th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

What This Means for the Future

The Swedish forward was acquired by the Bruins at the deadline from the New Jersey Devils. In four games with the Bruins so far Johansson has put up three assists. He’s currently playing on the second line for the Bruins and was brought in to provide some depth up front for them for the playoff push. David Backes will likely move up to the second line while Johansson is out of the lineup.

Johannson is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The Bruins will likely let him walk as they acquired him to be a rental for them for the rest of the season.

With the Bruins already down a few forwards, they will likely make a call-up from Providence.
