Patrice Bergeron

According to reports from Kathryn Tappen of the NHL Network, and Darren Dreger of TSN, Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron will be out for upwards of four weeks with an upper-body injury. It is believed that Bergeron injured his shoulder in Friday night’s game against the Dallas Stars.

Patrice Bergeron Suffers Separated Shoulder

Bergeron was injured after taking a hard hit from Stars forward Radek Faksa. The All-Star centre was driven into the boards and laid on the ice before getting up. Bergeron returned to the game, but he was favouring his shoulder. He missed Saturday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes.

He has scored nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points in 19 games this season. The Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec native also has 10 penalty minutes. His possession numbers are 56.3 percent Corsi-For and a relative Corsi-for of +7.6.

The 33-year-old has spent his entire 15-year NHL career with the Boston Bruins. He has put 298 goals and 462 assists for 760 career points in 982 career games. The Boston Bruins originally drafted Bergeron in the second round, 45th overall of the 2003 NHL draft. He was part of the Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup winning team. In 112 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, Bergeron has put up 31 goals and 86 points.

Bergeron was second in the league in scoring and he’ll be missed in the lineup. “It’s a tough one,” Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He plays such a good 200-foot game . . . It does have a trickle-down effect.”

What This Means for the Future

This injury is the latest in a string for Boston. Zdeno CharaCharlie McAvoyKevan Miller and others are out for the Bruins.

Cassidy is shuffling his lines, but there’s no replacing a four-time Selke Trophy winner. Bergeron is fantastic on both ends of the ice, especially face-offs. Boston hopes that the two-time Olympic gold medalist can return to the lineup quickly so it can keep pace in a tough Atlantic Division.
