Roman Abramovich has officially stepped down from Chelsea and has handed the ownership of the club to the trustees of the club’s charitable foundation after almost 20 years in charge.
The billionaire has decided to step down in the midst of the controversy that surrounds Russia’s invasion of Ukraine this week.
Abramovich has been subject to question recently due to his alleged friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Club Statement
In a statement released on chelseafc.com, Abramovich stated: “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities. I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”
Abramovich and his ownership of Chelsea has been in question in recent years. In 2019 he was named as a person of interest to Parliament. He allegedly has links to the Russian state and alleged ‘association with corrupt activity and practices’.
Furthermore, Abramovich has rarely been seen in the United Kingdom. In 2018, he withdrew his application for a British Tier 1 investor visa.
What Next?
Since taking over Chelsea in 2003, Abramovich has invested heavily. During his reign the club has won 18 major trophies.
In addition to his success, Abramovich had little patience for managers. He sacked 14 coaches while in charge at the club.
With the club no longer having Abramovich at the head of operations, it is yet to be seen how the club will work going forward.
