REPORT: Tottenham Hotspur Pursue Steven Bergwijn

Bergwijn to Bolster Spurs Ranks

If Spurs can secure Bergwijn, Mourinho will make his third signing. So far he has brought Gedson Fernandes to the club, and also activated Giovani Lo Celso’s option to buy. The arrival of Bergwijn would show positive signs of the club looking to strengthen their resources.

The winger has had a promising season so far. In 16 Eredivisie appearances, he has scored five goals and set up 10 more. He is an exciting player with power, pace and elegant dribbling skills to match. In terms of his positioning, he can cut inside and drive through the heart of defences, as well as beat his man on the flanks. Indeed, he is a multi-dimensional player who is capable of delivering a deadly ball into the box or firing a long shot into the net by himself. These are all qualities that the squad could benefit from, augmenting to the depth that has been lacking.

Dedicated

In a Sky Sports feature piece earlier in the year, Bergwijn was revealed as a driven, hardworking young player. But, he also retains an important sense of compassion and empathy for all those around him.

“Perhaps the biggest talent Steven possesses is that he works each day and every day to become a better player,” adds De Wijs. “As well as being a very talented player, Steven is also a wonderful person with a big heart. He is always there for anyone. And it says a lot that I, as a youth trainer, am still in touch with Steven on a regular basis.”

Bergwijn Keen to Dispel Rumour

The PSV player took to Instagram to voice his disappointment at rumours that suggested that he was refusing to play for PSV. “There is a whole lot written about me, which I have also read myself. I am really disappointed that it has come to this, there is no truth to it.

“I never refused to play for PSV, and would never do that. I have been there since I was young. PSV is in my heart. I have never refused to play for PSV, as you can see the media spins everything.

“I have indeed called the trainer, Ernest (Faber), this morning, and said that talks are going on, and he gave me permission. We had a good chat, and he wished me luck, everything went respectfully and according to plan.”
