One of Liverpool’s highest-scoring players has warned Trent Alexander-Arnold on what he can expect should he move to European giants Real Madrid. Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Michael Owen Gives Trent Alexander-Arnold Warning Over Real Madrid Move
“Once You Move, You Lose That Absolute Attachment”
In an interview with The Athletic’s Simon Morgan, Ex-Liverpool “star” Michael Owen has suggested Trent Alexander-Arnold will become a “trading proposition” should he move to Real Madrid. Owen, who made the move from Merseyside to Madrid himself, also admitted that he never wanted to leave Liverpool, but that the glamour of the 15-time European Champions was too much to resist.

Calling upon his own experiences, Owen said, “You lose the glue you once had going from contract to contract because you aren’t playing for the team you support,” and that, “You’re just a player trying to do well for a specific club”.
Los Blancos have been linked with Alexander-Arnold for some time, but since their current first-choice right-back Dani Carvajal has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury, there have been suggestions that Madrid could make an offer in the January window.
Having been at the club since the age of six, Alexander-Arnold is out of contract in the summer of 2025, so Real Madrid could pick him up then for free should they elect to wait. However, doubts have arisen in the Spanish capital on the back of unconvincing performances from Lucas Vázquez—Real’s makeshift backup in that position.
A Timely Encounter
Just to add a little more to the narrative, Liverpool will welcome Real Madrid to Anfield on Wednesday night in the Champions League. A modern-day continental classic, the two teams find themselves in opposing form in Europe. Arne Slot’s men are the only team to have a perfect record after four matches, sitting at the top of the pile, whilst Carlo Ancelotti’s side find themselves in 18th.
It will be a chance for Alexander-Arnold to give one final audition to Florentino Pérez before the Real Madrid president decides if he is to make the January jump, though the Englishman is not likely to play a huge amount of minutes. There is also an additional factor that he will have to deal with this time around.

In Sunday’s 3-0 away win against CD Leganés, Carlo Ancelotti launched a new tactic that we were yet to see this season. Kylian Mbappe operated primarily on the left of the front line, with Vinicius Jr through the middle. The two interchanged throughout the match, taking it in turns to terrorise the full-back.
Should Alexander-Arnold excel on Wednesday night, he’ll have to stop not just the best left-winger in the world, but the second best as well. We’ll leave you to decide which way round they go.
