Tottenham Hotspur have had a mixed-bag start to the 2024/25 Premier League and struggled for consistency, which was proven in their 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town at home recently. After that, the club looks set to receive some bad news over key midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

Tottenham Hotspur Midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur Reacts To Possible Suspension

What Did Bentancur Have To Say?

It has been reported recently that the Football Association (FA) are ready to dish out a seven-match ban for the Uruguayan midfielder for the racist remarks he made at teammate Son Heung-min earlier this June, where he hinted that all South Korean people look the same. In September, they had charged him for his comments and are now seemingly ready to give the worst possible verdict for the Spurs midfielder.

Bentancur is currently away on international duty with Uruguay and was asked about his thoughts on such a suspension, to which he responded: “My agent rang me and told me he had been notified that this was the sanction. So far, the club haven’t contacted me. I already knew more or less where it was going. Now the sanction is out, I want to be calm here with the national team. Then we’ll see when it’s time to go back.”

Spurs Could Face Major Blow With Bentancur Suspension

Bentancur issued a public apology for this incident right after it happened in June of 2024 and Son has not shown any disdain for the incident, as he had stated earlier this year: “We had a lot of good memories, we started playing together when he joined. He apologised straight afterwards, you know, when we had a holiday.  I was at home and I didn’t even realise what was going on. He just sent me a long text message that you could feel was coming from his heart. Afterwards, when he came back to the training ground for pre season, he just like felt really sorry and almost like cried when he apologised publicly and also personally as well. It felt like he feels really sorry.”

Despite all this, the Uruguayan midfielder still looks to be poised to get a hefty ban. This suspension would mean Tottenham would be without him for matches against Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool heading into the Christmas period as well as the Carabao Cup clash against Manchester United. The 27-year-old has one goal and one assist in 15 appearances across all competitions so far in the 2024/25 campaign.
