How Arsenal Have Lined up Recently

If you’re a first-team player at Arsenal and are currently fit, available and ready to play, chances are you’re going to.

Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard continue to be deployed as an auxiliary front-two, which was working well before the most recent international break, but not so much now.

Thomas Partey will maintain his record of starting all nine Premier League matches so far this season, his longest spell in the side since February 2023.

Overall, due to a lack of options if nothing else, Mikel Arteta’s team will continue to see few changes.

Arsenal Recent Form and Tactics

Last weekend’s calamitous 2-0 loss at Bournemouth remains Arsenal’s sole defeat this season, but things appear to be on the cusp of unravelling.

William Saliba’s sending off after just 30 minutes in Dorset is the third time the Gunners have been reduced to ten-men prior to half time and it’s no coincidence that these are the only Premier League games in which they’ve dropped points.

As a result, Arteta’s team kick off four points adrift pace-setters Liverpool, while a seven-point deficit would feel insurmountable, even at this early stage.

On Tuesday, despite victory, the North London zeitgeist didn’t exactly improve.

Arsenal stumbled to a 1-0 Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk; even the goal was unsatisfying, with Gabriel Martinelli’s shot ricocheting in via both the post and then Dmytro Riznyk’s unfortunately placed backside.

All eyes though are on this huge game on Sunday afternoon, so can the Gunners spark their season into life?

Arsenal Injuries to Consider

Arsenal are in the middle of what some may call an injury crisis.

First and foremost, William Saliba is suspended, while we know for sure that captain Martin Ødegaard, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney are all sidelined.

To make matters worse from a defensive point of view, Riccardo Calafiori hobbled off against Shakhtar Donetsk. While reports in Italy suggest the injury isn’t as bad as first feared, Calafiori won’t feature here.

Lastly, on the defensive front, Jurriën Timber hasn’t been seen since being taken off at half-time against Paris Saint-Germain on October 1, also not included in Netherlands’ preliminary squad for next month’s fixtures, suggesting we won’t see him again here either.

This leaves very few defensive options.

Thomas Partey seems set to fill-in at right-back, as he did in the second half on Tuesday, with Benjamin White partnering Gabriel in the middle.

Over on the left, it’ll have to be one of fit-again Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jakub Kiwior or teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly; take your pick Mikel!

To make matters worse, Bukayo Saka hasn’t featured since hobbling off at Wembley 17 days ago, with Arteta refusing to rule out his star winger in Friday’s press conference, but it seems unlikely he’ll be available.

As a result, both Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus have started in Saka’s absence so far this week, so one of the other will continue to deputise.
